Chita Rivera was born in Manhattan, New York City, on November 23, 1949. She was one of the few Hispanic children to be born in a hospital on the East side of Manhattan. Her father, a Cuban native, was a professional basso profundo and her mother a singer/composer. When she was four years old her parents separated and her mother moved to Puerto Rico
Chita's mother remarried at age thirteen and Chita lived with her stepfather for three years before returning to New York City with her stepmother. Chita began studying the piano at age five and studied piano at the Juilliard School of Music from age ten until she graduated at eighteen. During this time she also attended Sarah Lawrence College.
